Why One Request Screen Doesn't Mean One File
Instagram and Threads both route data requests through Meta's shared Accounts Center, which makes it easy to assume one export covers both. It doesn't. Meta's own export flow has you choose a specific profile when you create the export, Instagram or Threads, and that choice determines which follower data comes back. Pick Instagram and you get your Instagram followers. Pick Threads and you get your Threads followers. There is no combined option that returns both lists merged into one.
What If a Single ZIP Somehow Contains Both?
It can happen, usually when someone selects more categories than just "Followers and following" and ends up with a broader export that includes a Threads folder alongside the Instagram one. If you upload a ZIP like that to WhoUnfollowed, it reads the Instagram part and shows those results, then tells you a separate Threads export is needed to see Threads data too. Nothing gets silently merged or guessed at. The two datasets are kept apart on purpose, the same way WhoUnfollowed keeps every upload's contents client-side by default.
Do Instagram and Threads Followers Even Overlap?
Not automatically, and not reliably. When Threads launched, new accounts could carry over an existing Instagram following list as a starting point, but the two apps run independent follower graphs, current as of September 2026. Unfollowing someone on Threads does not touch your Instagram following, and unfollowing on Instagram does not touch your Threads following. Since Threads never notifies you when a follow changes either, treating one list as a stand-in for the other only hides real changes on whichever app you didn't check.
