I Unfollowed Someone on Instagram, But It Still Shows Me Following Them

You tap unfollow, close the app, and open it again to find you are still following them. This has actually been happening to a lot of people, including several public figures. Here is what is going on.

You tap unfollow. The button changes to "Follow." You move on with your day. Then you open Instagram later and that same account is back in your following list, like nothing happened. If this just happened to you, you are not losing your mind and you did not imagine tapping the button. Instagram unfollow actions failing or silently reverting is a real, documented problem, not just a you problem.

This has happened publicly, more than once

In early 2026, several public figures reported this exact issue with official accounts on Instagram. Singer Gracie Abrams said she had to unfollow the same account three separate times because it kept coming back. Demi Lovato posted that she had unfollowed an account twice in one day. Regular users reported the same thing in droves: accounts they never chose to follow just appeared in their following list, and unfollowing them did not stick.

Meta's own communications team responded publicly, saying people were not deliberately made to follow anything, but acknowledging that "it may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through." In plain terms: Instagram confirmed that unfollow actions can fail, lag, or get reversed on their end. That is not a rumor, it is an admission.

Why this happens

A few different things can produce the same symptom:

  • Request lag. Your tap sends a request to Instagram's servers, and under load or during a backend change, that request can fail silently instead of erroring out. The app shows the button change locally before confirming it server-side, so you see success even when it did not save.
  • App cache showing stale data. Sometimes the unfollow did work, but your app is showing a cached version of your following list from before the change synced.
  • A genuine bug during a backend rollout. The 2026 incident above happened alongside Instagram changing how certain accounts are handled. New code paths are exactly when this kind of bug tends to surface.

None of these are something you did wrong, and none of them mean your account is broken specifically.

How to tell if it actually worked

Closing and reopening the app is not a reliable test, since it can be showing you the same stale cache that caused the confusion. A few things that actually work:

  1. 1.Force-quit and reopen the app, not just switch away and back. This clears the in-memory cache that a soft-switch does not.
  2. 2.Check from a different device or the mobile web version (instagram.com in a browser). If the account shows as unfollowed there but not in your app, it is a sync/cache issue on your device, not a failed unfollow.
  3. 3.Wait and check again in a few hours. If Meta's own statement is accurate, some of these requests simply take time to finish processing.
  4. 4.Get the authoritative answer from your own data. Instagram's live UI is exactly the layer that is glitching. Your official data export reads the underlying account record, not the app's local cache, which makes it the one source that cannot lie to you the way the follow button just did.

If you are trying to find out who unfollowed you, not who you unfollowed

This bug runs in the other direction too. If someone unfollowed you and Instagram's notification or count is lagging, the visible number can look wrong for a while. That is a separate but related problem, covered in does Instagram notify when you unfollow someone and how to see who unfollowed you on Instagram.

The bottom line

If you unfollowed someone and Instagram still shows you following them, you almost certainly did nothing wrong. Instagram has publicly acknowledged that follow and unfollow requests can lag or fail. Force-quitting the app and waiting usually resolves it. If you want certainty instead of a guess, your own data export shows your real following list as Instagram's servers actually have it, not what a glitchy button claims.

Stop guessing. Get the real answer.

Instagram's own follow button can lag, glitch, or quietly revert. Your data export cannot. Upload it to WhoUnfollowed and see exactly who you follow and who follows you back, in your browser, with no password.
