A non-follower is someone you follow who does not follow you back. An unfollower is someone who used to follow you and stopped. They sound close, but they are different lists, and mixing them up is why so many people end up confused by their own results.
Non-Followers: Visible From One Export
Your following list minus your followers list gives you the accounts you follow that do not follow you back. That is a single comparison, so one Instagram export is enough to produce it.
The catch is what that list does and does not say. It does not tell you *why* someone is on it. Plenty of non-followers never followed you at all. You followed them, they never followed back, and nothing was ever withdrawn.
Unfollowers: Need Two Moments in Time
An unfollower is a change, not a state. To see a change you need a before and an after. One export is only the "after." So the only way to find someone who left is to compare two exports: anyone in the older followers list who is missing from the newer one unfollowed you in between.
You can do that comparison by hand, or let a tool match the two files for you.
A Quick Example
Say you follow 300 accounts and 220 of them follow you back. You have 80 non-followers. That number says nothing about whether any of them ever followed you.
Now say last month 500 accounts followed you and today 490 do, and 12 new people also followed. That means 22 people left. Those 22 are your unfollowers, and you can only know that because you had last month's list to compare against.
Where the Fans Fit In
There is a third group worth knowing. A fan follows you, but you do not follow them back. It is the mirror image of a non-follower. Between them, non-followers, fans, and mutuals cover everyone in either list.
Why Trackers Give Different Numbers
If two tools disagree, check what each one is counting. One may be listing non-followers and the other unfollowers. They are different questions, so the totals will not match. Your follower count can also differ from a tracker's simply because the numbers were taken at different times.
In Short
- A non-follower is someone you follow who does not follow you back. One export shows this.
- An unfollower is someone who used to follow you and left. Finding one takes two exports compared.
- Most non-followers never followed you, so they did not unfollow anything.
- A fan is the reverse: they follow you and you do not follow them.
If you want the non-follower list right now, upload your Instagram export. It runs in your browser and shows the list in about two minutes.
