Someone Followed You, Then Unfollowed? The Follow/Unfollow Method

Someone follows you, you follow back, and a few days later they are gone. That is not random. It is a known tactic called the follow/unfollow method, and here is how to catch everyone who has pulled it on you.

A new follower pops up. You follow back, maybe out of politeness. A few days later they are gone, and your count is exactly where it started. That is not a glitch, and it is rarely random. It is a deliberate tactic called the follow/unfollow method, and once you know the pattern you will see it everywhere. Here is why people do it, and how to find out exactly who has done it to you.

What the follow/unfollow method is

The move is simple. Someone follows a large batch of strangers, usually people in one niche, hoping a chunk of them follow back out of curiosity or reflex. A few days later they unfollow everyone, keeping their own following count low so their profile still looks selective. You were never a person to them, just a coin flip in a numbers game. It goes by a few names, follow-for-follow, F4F, or just follow/unfollow, but the mechanics are always the same.

How to tell it happened to you

One quiet unfollow is impossible to pin on anyone. The follow/unfollow method has a signature, though:

  • The account followed you first, recently, with no real interaction.
  • You followed back within a few days.
  • They unfollowed shortly after, whether or not you reciprocated.
  • Their own following count stays suspiciously low for their follower count. More on that in what a good follower-to-following ratio looks like.

Instagram will not flag any of this for you. It does not tell you when someone unfollows you, the same way it does not tell them when you unfollow. We covered exactly what is and isn't notified in does Instagram notify when you unfollow someone.

How to see exactly who did it

You cannot catch follow/unfollowers from memory, but your own data catches them for you. Anyone who followed you and later left is simply an unfollower, and unfollowers are something you can see precisely:

  1. 1.Request your Instagram data export. It is free and official. Steps: how to download your Instagram data.
  2. 2.Do it again a week or a month later.
  3. 3.Compare the two. Anyone in the first followers list but missing from the second unfollowed you, the follow/unfollowers included.

That comparison is the entire job of a who-unfollowed-you tool. Upload the export Instagram gives you and it shows the exact names in your browser, with no password and no login.

Should you do it back?

No. Running the follow/unfollow method yourself is the fastest way to earn an Instagram action block. Rapid, repetitive following and unfollowing is one of the clearest bot signals there is, and Instagram rate-limits it hard, usually somewhere around 30 to 60 actions an hour and 150 to 200 a day before the warnings start. If you want to clean up who you follow, do it deliberately and at a human pace. See is it safe to mass unfollow on Instagram for the concrete limits.

The bottom line

If a follower vanished days after you followed back, you were most likely on the receiving end of the follow/unfollow method. You cannot stop people from trying it, but you can see exactly who did it. Compare two of your own Instagram exports and every follow/unfollower shows up as what they really are: an unfollower. Our tool does that comparison in your browser, is fully open source, and never asks for your password.

See who followed then dropped you.

Anyone running the follow/unfollow trick on you shows up as an unfollower. Upload your own Instagram export and WhoUnfollowed lists exactly who left, in your browser, in about two minutes. No password, nothing uploaded.
